Look to Fair Trade for Your Upcycled Goods

It once was just the crafters and antiquing enthusiasts who took to upcycling, but with a thriving fair trade industry in the picture, they're no longer alone. The World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO) officially launched the People and Planet Initiative, which aims to bring the environment into the fair trade picture by selling upcycled goods that would otherwise be destined for the landfill.

The Deets On the People and Planet Initiative

The latest move from the WFTO is the People and Planet Initiative. At its core, the initiative aims to embrace upcycled goods for the sake of the environment, all without sacrificing fair treatment of workers.

Upcycled (adjective) - reused in such a way as to create a product of higher quality or value than the original. - Google Dictionary

Various companies across the globe are utilizing fair labor to collect waste materials. These materials then become the basis for a range of fair trade products, granting them a second shot at life.

For the WFTO, this initiative will gain momentum over the next three years. Through education and collaboration, it will make strides for the fairness of marginalized workers and a marginalized environment alike.

What Does a Circular Economy Have to Do with Fair Trade?

A circular economy aims to minimize waste by utilizing existing resources. That's exactly what the People and Planet Initiative is after. Taking hold of materials that were once destined for the landfill and repurposing them into useful, stylish and fairly made goods is the basis of it all.

A circular economy of the fair trade kind is beneficial because it's sustainable for the environment while still keeping ethical labor practices in mind.

Upcyclers, Rejoice!

The GGL team is proud to be a part of the worldwide movement of fair trade products.
